SabuloseCom replied: "Generic drug (pl. generic drugs, short: generics) is a drug which is produced and distributed without a brand name. A generic must contain the same active ingredients as the original formulation. In most cases, it is considered bioequivalent to the brand name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generics are assumed to be identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use.
Generic meds cheaper because - Manufacturers of generic drugs are mainly able to avoid the following three costs that brand name pharmaceutical companies incur: (1) costs associated with the research and development of the drug; (2) costs associated obtaining regulatory approval (i.e. proving safety and efficacy of a drug); and (3) marketing costs."

I have just been prescribed the generic for FOSAMAX, Alendronate sodium tablets. Anyone taking this or have ? taken this.....
I was prescribed 75mg once a week.
Just wondering if anyone had any side effects from it....like bloating or weight gain, since this "IS" salt....thanks
or anything worse.?????
grimmyTea replied: "Side effects from the sodium are the last thing you should be worried about. To put things in perspective, if we are trying to limit someone's sodium intake because of high blood pressure or something, a common restriction is 2 g per day. That's GRAMS, or in other words 2000 mg per day. Out of that 75 mg of Fosamax you are taking weekly, only about 5 mg is sodium. That's pissing in the ocean compared to how much sodium you are getting from your food.
Fosamax can have other side effects. The most common one I hear about is upper GI distress (i.e., stomach pain). Google it if you want to know more."
Basically, what is the difference between Actonel and fosamax? I had been on Actonel for five years, when the generic "alendronate came out, I asked to change to it. Should I have?
enamel replied: "Not a lot of difference...both are bisphosphonates and are used to fight osteoporosis. I would follow the dictates of your MD as he/she should be familiar with your particular needs. Dentally, both act similar in our concerns about your alveolar healing capabilities. good Luck"
Anyone (I'm male) else taking Fosamax for over 2 yrs experience moderate to severe side effects ? Especially in bones and joints ?(I had an enchrondoma(cartilage tumor causing a very painful shoulder) diagnosed with MRI in lt. shoulder, now possibly in rt shoulder after 5 yrs on Fosamax for severe osteopenia) Co-Enzyme Q and Naprosen (Alleve generic) seem to help. Bone density has substantially improved.
darealqueen replied: "No I have worked with 5 people all om long term fosamax and none of them have had any issues like that."
Is Boniva an example of the "Death Panels" Republicans keep talking about? "...Bonivas convenient, sure. But as the Adwatch video explains, that convenience comes at a priceit can set you back about 10 times the cost of the similar drug alendronate (the generic version of Fosamax). No wonder Bonivas backers, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline can afford to invest in a big-name celebrity to pitch it. Interestingly, studies dont show that Boniva is any more effective than other bisphosphonates. So unless you absolutely cant tolerate a weekly dosing schedule, it makes sense to try the generic first, even if it means you wont take the same drug as Sally.
And thats if you really need the drug in the first place. While theres clear evidence that bisphosphonates reduce the risk of bone fractures among people with osteoporosis, theres some concern in the medical community that more people will take the drugs than needed, due in part to osteopenia, a pre-osteoporosis diagnostic category for which the bisphosphonates worth is less clear. That means millions of postmenopausal women with reduced bone densitybut not osteoporosiscould expose themselves to the drugs risks, including heartburn, jawbone damage, and vision-harming eye inflammation. While the latter two side effects are very rare, they certainly make Boniva seem less glamorous..."
In other words, Will the government deny someone this treatment, just because it's 10 times more expensive than the generic and not proven to work for people who don't actually have osteoporosis?
(((James L))): Talk about taking quotes out of context!
"In other words, this is what the truth is and a candidate will never say, but what a candidate should say if we were in the kind of democracy where citizens were honored in terms of their practice of citizenship and they were educated in terms of what the issues were and they could separate myth from reality in terms of what candidates would tell them..."

James L replied: ""We are going to have to, if you're very old, we're not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It's too expensive, so we're going to let you die."
--ROBERT REICH, truth teller, Obama economic adviser.
Death panels are never called death panels, and the never kill people. They just allow people to die because they refuse to save their lives. Causing a death would be evil. Allowing a death to happen, is just letting nature run its course. Those of us in the VA Hospital system already know that this is how government run health care works. I'm glad Reich is at least honest about it.
Here's my first hand knowledge about it. It took 5 years of being bounced around the VA hospital, from one med student to another. They don't have many doctors so they staff the hospital with con ed 3rd year med students serving a 6 month indenture. After five years talking to kids who knew nothing about medicine and suffering chronic pain, I finally found out that there was a pain clinic at the VA. It only took 3 more years after that to get an appointment. I went in hoping for a miracle. What I got was tossed out of the clinic for daring to say that I'd already tried the medicine the doctor wanted to give me and it hadn't worked. Then I tried physical medicine. One of the doctors there was a skilled acupuncturist. We tried it and after 3 weeks I felt much better, But I kept getting worse again if I missed a week. After 8 years of suffering constant pain I had my life back. One day a week of needles and I could almost live a normal life. It was great. That's when I got the bad news. The doc said that because my relief was only temporary and required constant retreatments, that it had failed. I said that's crazy this works great. He said that he was the only acupuncturist there and he only worked 4 hours a week and had over 200 patients. The treatments failed utterly if not maintained every week and he was telling me he could see me only once a year. I asked why? He said that if the treatment couldn't cure my incurable condition, that it was a waste of money to treat me. You can't be made healthy, you can't be made productive, you are not worth helping. Improving my life by eliminating the chronic pain that tortures me every day of my life is not good enough to take up one hour a week of a VA doctor's time. When Obama says, "I will not allow you to spend money on things that don't make you healthy," That is what he means. If you can't be made healthy, if you're too old, or healing you would be too expensive, we will not waste our valuable time and money on you. Of course they won't kill you. They will let you die. I've been told that no one can help me, there is no hope and I should never go back again. I was sent home to die. But unfortunately, my disease isn't fatal. At least not directly. It is just torturous misery for the rest of my life; however long I can endure it before I take my own life. That's what government health care has done for me.
I didn't take it out of context. He said he was telling the truth that no politician will ever have the courage or stupidity to say out loud. He was explaining what every intelligent person already knows but won't say because they are trying to fool the ignorant masses into believing something else. I read it in its full context."

Agent Orange replied: "It seems like every drug they advertise has severe side effects.
Why not just sell rat poison in caplets?
Have you ever heard of restless leg syndrome 10 years ago?
We are a bunch of suckers."
ruth replied: "No, of course not, "death panels" refers to people being denied life-saving care or being made to wait so long for care that death occurs before care is received or unnecessary deaths due to poor quality of care. So, you're so sure that the government will not deprive you of life-saving care, won't make you wait months for routine procedures, won't stint on quality of care, then why even waste your time and this effort on the subject? The notion of "death panels" cannot surely be that entertaining, even for a lib."
Hondo98 replied: "I think the death panel commonly referred to is the GOP controlled government in Texas. They cut me off of medicaid because the cost of living adjustment pushed my disability income above the threshold. I have made disability since I ran out of my life savings after being diagnosed incurably terminally ill and disabled in 2002. This only happens in America and the third world. They're letting me die, and the conservatives here on YA either deny reality or say it's my fault."
ohbrother replied: "You would think in this age of modern medicine they would be able to strengthen bones with a high calcium diet. I watch these commercials on all the medicines they have now. The time it takes to list all the side affects is about the same as it is to tell the benefits. If the illness doesn't kill you, the cure will."
